Kolmen melojan unelma (*
*) Askon unelma ei toteudu tällä kertaa. Hän joutuu jäämään Suomeen.
Olemme muutaman vuodet haaveilleet kunnon melontaretkestä Kanadaan. Nyt on kohde, porukka ja ajankohta selvillä: sunnuntaina heinäkuun kahdeksas päivä 2012 lähdemme Helsingistä Kanadaan, Yukonin territorion Snake Riverille. Lauri, Asko ja minä, Jaakko.

For some years we have been dreaming of The Paddling Trip to Canada. Now destination, the guys and the timing is here: on sunday the 8th of June year 2012 we leave the city of Helsinki and fly to Canada, Yukon Territory to paddle the Snake River. |
| Snake river on vielä jäässä. Kevät on tulossa, pakkasta ei ole kuin kuusi astetta.
Matkan perusajoitus on tehty. Lähtö Helsingistä 8/7 ja paluu 8/8. Matkalle lähtee Lauri Salama, Asko Mustonen ja minä.
Lento Hki - Whitehorse, Yukon, Kanda
voi olla välilaskuja, liput ostetaan viimeistään huhtikuun lopussa.
Auto Whitehorse - Mayo
ajomatkaa tulee n. 400 km. Alkaa seudun etäisyydet korostua
Lento Mayo - Duo Lakes
lento pienkoneella n. 250 km, laskeudutan Duo Lakes -järvelle, jonka korkeus merenpinnasta on n. 1200 metriä. Täällä olemme ensimmäisen yön metsässä. Seuraavana päivänä raahaamme kanoootit ja varusteet parin kilometrin matkan Snakeriverin latvavesille.
Melonta Snake river - Peel river, Taco Bar
melontaa n. 300 km. Joki putoaa matkalla runsaasta kilometristä vajaaseen sataan metriin. Varsinaisia putouksia matkalla ei ole, mutta muutamia kanjoneita, joissa vesi pusertuu kapeaan väylään kallioiden väliin. Taco Bar ei ole anniskeluravintoa, vaan särkkä ja leventymä Peel-joessa, josta vesitaso voisi hakea meidät pois. Tarkoituksemme on kumminkin jatkaa vielä 200 kilometriä Peel riveriä Dempster highwayn lossille. Alla fiilistelyvideo Snakeriveriltä. Ei siellä kyllä mitään inkkareita ole, pelkkää erämaata.
Our schedule: leaving Helsinki the 8th of July, return the 8th of Auggust. There are three of us: Lauri Salama, Asko Mustonen & me. We paddle open canoes, one double, one solo.
Flight Helsinki - Whitehorse, Yukon, Canda. We buy the ticets at the end of April.
Car-ride Whitehorse - Mayo, distance 400 km.
Floatplane Mayo - Duo Lakes ca. 250 km. Duo Lakes is about 1200 meters from the sea level. We stay here at least one night and then carru our gear to the river. About 2 km through the woods. Paddling Snake river to Peel river, Taco Bar, ca. 300 km. River drops about 900 meters. Mostly class II rapids, depends on the watyer level, some tricky canyons. Taco Bar is not a restaurant but a wider part of Peel river, where waterplane can land to pick us up. Our intention is to continue 200 more kilometers to Dempster Hwy ferry. Peel river - Dempster Hwy -lossi
sileää, mutta virtaavaa melontaa pari sataa kilometriä, kunnes tullaan alueen ainoalle valtatielle, Dempster highwaylle. Siinä noustaan maihin, käydään vanhassa kauppapaikassa, Fort McPhersonissa ja selvitetään paluukyyti.
Fort McPherson - Eagle Plains - Dawson City - Whitehorse
bussilla tai kimppakyydillä takaisin kuuluisaa Dempster highwayta. Tie näyttää suomalaiselta hiekkatieltä, mutta autovuokraamot ilmoittavat, että heidän autojaan ei saa mennä sinne rikkomaan. Koluamme paluumatkalla joitain kultakuumeajan paikkoja. Autoilua paluumatkalla tulee runsaat 1000 km.
Peel river - Dempster Hwy -ferry. Flat, but moving water. Hopefully no headwinds. We are going to visit Fort McPherson before heading back.
Fort McPherson - Eagle Plains - Dawson City - Whitehorse. Car ride along the famous Dempster Highway to Dawson City. Overnight there and then bus to Whitehorse.As a whole about 1000 km ride. Big country big tolerances.
